First Encounter

First Encounter captures a moment of charged stillness and diplomacy on the Southern Plains. Inspired by the writings of George Catlin, Shannon Stirnweis portrays the historic first meeting between the Comanche and the U.S. Dragoons in the 1830s.

A lone warrior rides forward on a powerful white horse, adorned with a buffalo hide and carrying a fourteen-foot lance, signaling both strength and restraint. Rather than conflict, the rider extends a gesture of greeting — a moment of recognition between cultures before the rest of the Comanche approach.
